Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska

Alaska Child Welfare Disproportionality Reduction Project: The Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska, in partnership with 15 tribes and tribal organizations, the Alaska Office of Children’s Services, and Alaska Court Improvement Project, will implement a four-year project to strengthen cultural competence and interagency collaboration. The project will implement a family-centered, state-tribal alternative response system which promotes tribal participation in decision making and service delivery, enhances tribal resource family development, and prevents out-of-home placements whenever possible.

Leadership Summit Builds Capacity to Address Disproportionality
Nestled in the beauty of Kenai Peninsula, Native leaders came together in September 2011 for a three day retreat to focus on building leadership skills and renewed commitment to decrease the number of Native children taken into out of home care in Alaska. WPIC convened the Summit to bring together Native youth leaders, Office of Children’s Services management staff, representatives of the Alaska Court Improvement Project, Alaska policy makers, and with generous support from Casey Family Programs, many key Alaska Native leaders from some of the most remote regions of the State

 

Hawaii human services department shared expertise in addressing disproportionality with Alaskan Tribes

This mini-conference was coordinated by WPIC, in partnership with 16 tribal organizations, to provide an opportunity for peer-to-peer networking to enhance tribal capacity to provide in-home services and increase access to community resources to prevent out of home placement whenever possible. The Hawaii Department of Human Services shared their experiences in significantly reducing disproportionate representation of Hawaiian Native children in the state’s child welfare system.
