Commissioner Samuels Meets the Los Angeles Project Team
Bryan Samuels, Commissioner, Administration for Children, Youth and Families, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, recently visited the WPIC Los Angeles Project Team to learn first-hand about the Los Angeles County Achieving Systems Change Project, one of three systems change projects supported by the WPIC in regions IX and X. This project is intended to support the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) to more effectively manage strategic directions, promote data-driven decision making, enhance stakeholder engagement, and align multiple initiatives across the county. The meeting provided an opportunity for key department leaders to hear Commissioner Samuels’ insights on strategies to effectively implement data-driven management. DCFS leaders and the WPIC Project Team learned the importance of providing skill-building support to all levels of department staff to prepare them to better analyze data and tell the story behind the data. Participants also learned that a strength-based management approach, clear and consistent communication, and shared accountability were key factors for success.
